...and we're back
You may have noticed that the graphics on this blog went missing (thanks Steve!) for a few days.
It's a learning curve - especially when you use other people's templates for a blog update. It seems that the graphics being referenced that were used in this one have either moved from the supplier's server, or been deleted. Fortunately the template file came with all the graphics in a folder, so I've made a plan and stuck them where I can find them permanently. Yes, I know the background's not perfect (but you should have seen the first attempt! :-) ) - that will be fixed in due course.
I'm hoping that the new graphics location will mean the page loads faster - if it doesn't please leave a note in the comments and I'll try something else.
Meantime Serenity - and the tree up top - are back.

Ever had one of those posts in progress that just block further blogging?
I've had one languishing in Drafts. It seemed like a good idea at the time, it was everything I was thinking and feeling and wanted to spout forth on, but I ran out of time to finish it, then tried to go back and do so the next day - only to find I'd lost my train of thought. So I tried again the day after, and nope, no luck. It's turned into an awkward mumbling affair that has nothing to do with what I originally intended!
But wrestling with it has prevented me from posting anything else this week.
It's a Blocker post.
Anyway, it's gone now - so perhaps the words can flow once more.
Oh hey - here's to the weekend, y'all.

Traffic(non)Synergy
You may have noticed a slight increase in "billboard activity" on this blog in recent months. Running a classic Land Rover isn't the cheapest of activities (especially if you want to commute over the base of a mountain in it every day), and I've been trying to add a few cents to the coffers by way of pay-per-click advertising. The "Donate" option at right (moneybookers) hasn't panned out particularly well, so I've been trying a few other things.
Above this post is a relatively-new advertising block, "sponsored" by TrafficSynergy. You may notice that it's devoid of ads...
A week ago, while looking for a pay-per-click provider, I came across this company/website. They seemed to have an easy enough system, paid in my local currency, so I thought I'd give them a go.
I've had well over 200,000 hits on my blog thus far (yes, I'm a relative small-fry, but that's still quite the number) - and the pace has picked up recently in hits-per-day. Many of those visitors clicked on the TrafficSynergy ads once I'd finally found how to position them correctly, and within the space of a few days I'd built up revenue of just over R100.
Until the ads suddenly disappeared and I could no longer access my account. I assumed the site was down (it was a weekend - and their offices are based in an industrial area in Cape Town, perhaps no-one was home?), so shot off an email to them asking if there was a site problem. Only to receive a response claiming my account had been "flagged for fraud", thus was inaccessible. Days later, they have not restored it in spite of numerous emails to them. They state that they can terminate or refuse to pay at their discretion. Which means that no matter how many clicks I send their way, no matter how many of their advertisers they charge for clicks generated from MY visitors, they simply won't honour the pay-out if they don't feel like it.
And that seems to be the case at the moment.
So here's a question for you. Are there any honest pay-per-click affiliate programmes out there that I can replace them with?

Quiet
October 20, 2003. Nearly 4 years ago. That's the day I started blogging.
Between then and now a lot of words have flowed out on screen and into the wide world of cyberspace. I've grown and changed and aged - so many things have happened between then and now, both good and bad.
When I started to blog a lot of folk were very surprised that I had so much to say. That I had an opinion on everything, and long rambling thoughts of my own. That I had big dreams and a wild imagination, that I had a dry sense of humour and quirky view of life in general. That I had an endless supply of words, and barely ever shut up.
And why were they surprised?
Because for most of my life I've not said much at all. I'm the quiet one, the background chick - no loud personality, no strident arguments put forth, and usually too timid to tell a joke in case it falls flat. The observer, the listener, the mouse.
Blogging opened up the dam - let me speak my words with time to think between them, let me delete things that were said in error, let me ponder and portray what was going on inside me without generating brash impressions of the wrong type.
At least in cyberspace. Usually.
But sometimes I do wonder if I should return to being the quiet one both online and off. To keeping my thoughts to myself and not reacting too quickly or saying much of anything at all. To simply keeping my mouth shut, all the time, saying only what is minimally necessary.
Because - sometimes, regularly, too often - I tend to only open my mouth to put my foot, nay both feet, straight into it. And more often than not it doesn't only affect me.

1. I have a large "beauty spot" right next to my bellybutton and a small one on my boob. Not many people have seen either.. :-)
2. I used to be able to do a backbend without bending my knees. VERY supple lower back - not sure I could do it now though. I think the accident I was in years ago put paid to that one.
3. My eyelids are two different shapes - ever so subtley.
4. I regret cutting my sit-on-long hair regularly. Other days I'd like to shave off what's left and start again.
5. I have a birthmark on my butt. Not many people have seen it... :-)
6. I've never considered running away to the circus. I have, however, considered running away to drive trucks long-distance for a while.
7. I have a not-so-secret addiction to pimento-stuffed olives. Thank goodness they're too pricey to indulge in regularly.

Lunch with Jen
Jen and her family finally made it! They got a bit lost on the way (new territory), but it was so great to meet her, Dave, Madelaine and Carter. Thankfully they survived my cooking.. :-) Even seemed to enjoy it!
It's funny how bloggers can connect suddenly in person. If we were to meet as non-bloggers on the street it would be a dance of getting-to-know you, a circling to find similarities to build on. But us bloggers just dive right in there as if we've been talking forever. Sure there are some aspects of "meet someone new" that are the same, blogger or not - but with writing online in common, with a chance to have gotten to know each other through words on the screen, without fail it's been a simple transition into carrying on a conversation we haven't actually started yet! Strange to try explain, but that's how it goes.
From here Jen and co are off to Knysna - a couple of hours drive away and a different world in terms of landscape and experience. South Africa is such a vastly-differing country from one end to another that you could go everywhere and still be surprised by its variety. I have no doubt they'll love it.
So what's Jen like? AMAZING. As is the rest of her family. She has this comfortable, beautiful vibe that just flows out of every pore - exactly as she is in cyberspace, but more so. I'm so honoured that she stopped by to say hi.
So here's us - Jen, Madelaine and me - and a free shot of my Landy while we're at it. :-)
